Houston had no answer for East Carolina’s 3-point assault Wednesday night.
It might have cost the Cougars any chance of a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
Tremont Robinson-White had five of East Carolina’s 11 3-pointers as the Pirates stunned the fifth-ranked Cougars 82-73 at Minges Coliseum in Greenville, N.C.
UH suffered just its second loss of the season, but this one will sting. The Pirates, who entered on a five-game losing streak and in last place in the American Athletic Conference, delivered the biggest basketball win in school history.
ECU (8-6, 2-6 AAC) made 11-of-24 3-pointers, seizing an 11-point lead after White’s fifth of the game and a jumper by J.J. Miles with 5:22 remaining. It was the largest deficit this season for the Cougars, whose only other loss was 65-64 at Tulsa.
Jayden Gardner had 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead five Pirates in double figures. Robinson-White added 17, Miles had 14 and Bitumba Baruti chipped in 13.
DeJon Jarreau had a game-high 25 points for Houston (15-2, 10-2 AAC). Marcus Sasser had 17 and Justin Gorham added 11 points and 11 rebounds, his ninth straight game in double figures.
Quentin Grimes struggled for the second game, finishing with seven points on 2-of-10 shooting.
Ahead 40-37 at halftime, the Cougars quickly fell behind in the second half and only briefly regained the lead.
Midway through the second half, the Pirates took a 51-43 lead. Jarreau and Sasser followed with back-to-back 3s and Reggie Chaney made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 51. ECU led for the final 12 minutes.
ECU’s 83 points were the most allowed by UH, which entered the game allowing the fewest points in the nation (56). The Pirates shot 47.4 percent.
The last win over a ranked team for ECU came in 2002 against No. 13 Marquette.
