I have to comment on John Shirley’s letter to the editor titled “Accountability for sheriff’s office” (Our Readers’ Views, Feb. 17). How well did Mr. Shirley read the detailed articles that have appeared in The Columbian?
When the Clark County Sheriff pulled over Jenoah Donald it was about 7:30 p.m., so initially they wouldn’t even be able to determine the race of the driver. What the deputy did know was that the Mercedes had an Oregon license plate and was circling a neighborhood known for drug sales. After being pulled over, Mr. Donald refused to cooperate and step out of the car. Subsequently there was a struggle inside the car with one of the deputies and Mr. Donald was shot.
Whether proper police procedure was followed will have to be determined by the Vancouver Police Department, which is leading the investigation into the shooting. I am confident that the investigation will be thorough.
