The Game
After 463 days, the Murray State football team finally returns to action Saturday at Roy Stewart Stadium against rival UT Martin. Kickoff from The Track is scheduled for 2 p.m. with the game being broadcast on Froggy 103.7 FM and ESPN+.
The Series At A Glance
Sunday will be the 60th meeting between UT Martin and Murray State with the Racers leading the all-time series, 37-21-1, as well as the series in Murray at 20-8-1.
Scouting The Skyhawks
After going 7-5 overall and finishing third in the OVC with a 6-2 mark in league play, UT Martin will be looking to make a serious run at an OVC title this season.
The Skyhawks have just 13 returners overall for the spring 2021 season led by the offensive trio of quarterback John Bachus III, receiver Colton Dowell and running back Peyton Logan. In 2019, Bachus went 188-for-332 in the air for 2,549 yards with 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Meanwhile, Dowell caught the ball 38 times for four touchdowns on 765 yards, while Logan carried the ball 102 times for 784 yards and six touchdowns. As a team, the Skyhawks averaged 222.2 passing yards and 109.8 rushing yards per game last year for an average of 332.0 total yards per game which yielded 25.6 points per game.
Defensively, UT Martin's opponents were only allowed 24.9 points per game last season on a combined 383.6 yards per game. Returning for the Skyhawks this season will be safety JaQuez Akins who was a monster on the defensive side of the ball in 2019. He tallied 92 total tackles with 5.5 tackles-for-loss-, six pass breakups, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and an interception.
A New Era
Murray State opens a brand new era of football Sunday when Dean Hood takes the field as the head coach of the Racers for the first time. Hood is no stranger to the OVC, having spent eight seasons at EKU winning two titles and making three NCAA appearances.
The Track Is Open
In a strange occurrence, Sunday will serve as the season, home and OVC opener for Murray State. The Racers are 51-39-4 all-time in season openers, 64-26-4 in home openers, 30-42 in OVC openers and 17-19 when the OVC opener is at home. In addition, the Racers are 3-2-1 all-time against UT Martin in season openers, 2-1-1 in home openers and 1-2 in OVC openers.
Clear The Track
One of the greatest traditions in college football returns this season, as Racer 1 will once again make its way around the track following Murray State touchdowns. This year the horse, whose real name is Vegas, will be mounted by junior Emily Helmick of St. Charles, Mo.
OVC Accolades
Murray State placed three on the preseason All-OVC list with wide receiver LaMartez Brooks and return specialist Malik Honeycutt earning the honor.
Racer Returns
Murray State returns 18 starters from the 2019 team this season including eight on offense, five on defense and two on special teams.
Turn Of The Century
With 976 career receiving yards, Junior LaMartez Brooks needs just 24 yards to reach the 1,000-yard milestone
Finally
With the postponement of last week's season opener at SEMO, when the ball is kicked Sunday it will have been 463 days since the Racers last played a game.
Lobos To Racers
Murray State added just two players at the start of this semester that will suit up this spring. Former New Mexico teammates safety Brandon Burton and inside linebacker Jacobi Hearn have joined the Racers just in time for the historic spring season.
Number Changes
As the year changes, so do the numbers. Several Racers will be wearing new numbers for the 2020 season.
