The amount of new cases of COVID-19 has creeped up slightly in the last week here in Grady County, although the number of locals killed by the disease has dropped.
Public Health information indicates that 50 more Grady County residents tested positive in the last week, bringing the total number of locals to have the disease to 1,419 in the last 11 months. The week earlier we had just 45 new cases.
One more local resident died from COVID-19 in the last week, according to public health information, bringing that total to 40 killed by the virus in the last year. That is down from the four new deaths reported the previous week.
As of Tuesday morning, Grady General Hospital had zero covid-positive patients, according to hospital spokeswoman Shealy Register, down from 11 such patients last week. The local hospital reached a reported high of 12 COVID-19 patients on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville had 15 covid-positive patients Tuesday, Register reports, while Mitchell County Hospital in Camilla had one and Brooks County Hospital in Quitman had two. All of the hospitals, like Grady General, are operated by Archbold Medical Center.
Grady County Schools had a big drop in students affected by COVID-19 and a slight drop in employees facing the same issue.
As of Tuesday, there were 87 students on quarantine in the county school system, and four who were positive for the disease. There were five employees who were positive and nine on quarantine, according to Dr. Kermit Gilliard, county school superintendent.
The week prior, there were 180 students on quarantine and 12 positive with the disease. There were eight positive employees and nine on quarantine.
All four of the positive students in the county this week attend Cairo High School.
The positive employees include one at C.H.S., two at Northside Elementary School, one at Washington Middle School and one at Whigham School.
The majority of the quarantined students attend C.H.S. followed by Northside. Students on quarantine are 45 at C.H.S.; 23 at Northside; eight at W.M.S.; four at Eastside Elementary School; three at Shiver; and two each at Southside Elementary and Whigham schools.
Only three schools have employees on quarantine at three each. Those schools are Cairo High, Northside Elementary and Washington Middle schools.
Testing for the virus is free from the Grady County Health Department on Fridays during the month of February.
Testing is taking place 9 a.m. until noon on Fridays at Barber Park located at 250 Long Branch Church Road in Cairo.
Appointments for the Grady County site, and all public health collection sites, are strongly encouraged.
People don’t have to be a resident of Grady County to be tested at the Cairo site.
In turn, Grady County residents can be tested in other counties if the time suits better and appointments are available.
