After initially committing to remote learning only for all high school students through Friday, L’Anse Area superintendent Susan Tollefson believes quarantine restrictions may not be lifted by the end of the weekend.

We are strongly considering extending it into part of next week. We just have not finalized looking at where all of our quarantines end yet. Right now we are remote for this week, but there is the possibility of extending that partly into next week.

This is the first time that students have been the cause of a COVID-related closure, says Tollefson.

We had to go remote in the middle of November because we did have quarantines from COVID affecting kitchen staff and custodial staff.

She is happy to report that grades K-8 are doing well, and operating as close to normal as possible. All district springtime events are trying to be squeezed in, with some modifications such as moving outside. Last week was the National Honor Society induction ceremony at the high school, which had to get relocated to the auditorium to satisfy distancing requirements.

Tollefson says graduation may be outdoors. If inside, graduates would be kept to a limit of eight guests each. Tollefson says it is expected that roughly 45 students will make up the Class of 2021.
