The huge circulation in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean was well organized to eventually be called the Subtropical Cyclone Ana. It is called “subtropical” because it is surrounded by cool winter air.

The system we were seeing in the western Gulf traveled over Texas without organization. The upper winds were so strong that sufficient thunderstorm activity engulfed the center and at least could not be a depression. It was almost successful, but not perfect.

The subtropical cyclone Announcer was finally formed on the head of a comma in a giant cloud in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. This system was born as a common non-tropical cyclone system during the winter.

However, it stalled long enough that the center of rotation could hang over warm enough water near Bermuda, allowing more tropical cores to form around the circulation center. .. The core finally met the criteria for getting a name.

In 2020, the first six named storms were all formed from this process, four of which were formed in warm waters very close to the US coast. This is the seventh consecutive year that these elements have come together to generate at least one named storm before the official start of the June 1st hurricane season.

For Anna, the seawater northeast of Bermuda is not particularly warm. It is closer to 70 degrees than the normally required 80 degrees. However, the air above the circulation is very cold and is a legacy of Ana’s winter origin, so the contrast between the sea temperature and the air above is sufficient to energize the system.

Anna is expected to go out into the sea and die within a few days. The main effect is high surf in the north along Bermuda and the east coast of the United States.

In the Gulf of Mexico, the well-organized circulation we saw yesterday moved across the east coast of Texas. It was becoming a tropical depression, but time was running out. Now it’s just a rainmaker in eastern Texas, producing gusts of heavy rain and increasing long-term rainy days in that part of the country.

There seems to be no other cooking in the tropics. Often things burn fast and then go to sleep until August. There is no guarantee, but let’s expect it.

NOAA predicts a busy hurricane season, but not in 2020.
