NEW YORK — The Rays started their remarkable run by beating the Yankees on May 13, and they extended it to a franchise-best 16 wins in 17 games by beating them again Monday afternoon, 3-1.
The day looked to have a chance to be historic for another reason, as Rich Hill seemed positioned to have a shot at their first complete game in more than five years, sailing through five shutout innings on just 56 pitches.
But, somewhat surprisingly, and for no apparent injury or illness issues, he was taken out at that point. He was replaced by Michael Wacha, who was later followed by Pete Fairbanks, Ryan Thompson and J.P. Feyereisen to finish it out.
The Rays improved their majors-best record (pending the Padres result) to 35-20, extended their latest winning streak to five and finished May with a 22-6 record, their second-best percentage-wise (.786) for any month ever.
The Rays had one previous 15-1 run in franchise history, around their team-record 12-game winning streak in 2004. Before Monday, they had never won 16 of 17 games.
The Yankees, meanwhile, lost for the sixth time in their last seven games and dropped to 29-25.
The Rays took a 1-0 lead in the third. Kevin Kiermaier led off with a single, then Manuel Margot laced a ball to the rightfield corner. With Kiermaier running hard from the start, third-base coach Rodney Linares waved him in and the Yankees helped as Rougned Odor didn’t cleanly handle the relay throw.
They made it 2-0 at the start of the fourth, Austin Meadows hitting Jameson Taillon’s first pitch just over the rightfield fence, the 334-foot shot long enough to be a home run at Yankee Stadium.
The Rays extended the lead to 3-0 by scoring a single run again in the fifth. Kiermaier led off with a double to right-center, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a two-out single by Randy Arozarena.
Hill continued his remarkable run over his last seven starts, posting a 3-2 record, 1.11 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 40-2/3 innings. He allowed only three singles Monday, though the Yankees did hit several balls hard for outs. He walked two and struck out two, down from a career-high 13 in his last outing on Tuesday.
Michael Wacha replaced Hill and zipped through the sixth on seven pitches, retiring Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and Gio Urshela. He got two groundouts to start the seventh, then gave up a homer to Miguel Andujar, his first of the season.
Fairbanks took over and walked pinch-hitter Gary Sanchez, but then struck out Brett Gardner.
Monday’s matinee was the opener of a four-game series.
