“Today, strengthening is expected and Nicholas could reach the northwestern Gulf Coast as a hurricane,” said Eric Blake, senior specialist at the National Hurricane Center. He said weakening was expected on Tuesday and Wednesday as the storm moved over land.

AccuWeather meteorologist Ryan Adamson was more optimistic and suggested that the storm would not reach the strength of the hurricane as it spends only a limited amount of time in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. It is a continuous wind of at least 74 mph.
