The second part of our four-part series sets our sights on the Colorado Avalanche last time out against Atlantic Division teams. Namely, the division has the current back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning. These two electric teams (pun intended!) will put on a show later this year.
However, there’s more to the Atlantic other than the Lightning. Let’s run down the list and see how the Avs did last time out against more teams out East.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Boston Bruins
The Avs visited Boston victoriously, winning 4-1 in TD Garden on December 7th, 2019. After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Avs roared back with four unanswered goals by four different players. The only person to score multiple points that night was Joonas Donskoi with two assists.
The depth of the Avs helped that night and will help this season too. The Bruins will continue to be a prominent player in the East, so expect a solid matchup with the B’s this season.
The Avs visit Boston two days before Christmas on December 23rd, and welcome the B’s to Denver January 26th.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Tampa Bay Lightning
The Avs suffered defeat to the Stanley Cup champions 4-3 in OT on February 17th, 2020. While earning a point, it was rough. They fell behind 3-1, roared back, and eventually lost out to Nikita Kucherov in the extra frame.
Of course, the Lightning are the Stanley Cup champs and could even win three straight this upcoming season. This matchup will be pivotal in the playoff race and a preview of what we could see come next June.
The Avs visit the Sunshine State on October 23rd, and see Tampa come to Denver on December 18th.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
The first Canadian team to be featured in this series saw the Avs win out North of the border 3-1 against Toronto on December 4th, 2019. A spectacular shorthanded goal by Valeri Nichushkin was the difference, and finished off by a Donskoi empty netter.
Toronto continues to be a threat in the East with their own big name players of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and John Taveres. The addition of Petr Mrazek will be cruical too in them looking to get past the first round of the playoffs.
The Avs visit Toronto on December 1st, and then the original six team visits Denver a month later on January 8th.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Florida Panthers
The Avs last saw the Panthers on October 30th, 2019 in a 4-3 OT loss. The Avs blew this one away, giving up a 3-1 lead with under 10 minutes left in the third period, and eventually losing out to Johnathan Huberdeau less than 30 seconds into the extra frame.
Huberdeau lead the team that night with two goals, and continues to lead the Panthers this season along with their big names like Sergei Bobrovsky and Aleksander Barkov. This 1996 Stanley Cup Final matchup should be decently fun when these two meet later this season.
The Avs visit Sunrise, FL on October 23rd and will do battle with them in Denver on December 12th.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Montreal Canadiens
The Avs hung on last time out against the Canadiens 3-2 in the Bell Center on December 5th, 2019. The Avs blew out to a 3-0 lead thanks to nine different players who got on the scoresheet that night, but nearly lost it as two goals by the Canadiens made things interesting.
The Stanley Cup finalists from last year came out of nowhere to compete, including the upset of the Avs toughest opponent last season, the Vegas Golden Knights. While they have lost some talent, Montreal will look to go on another miracle run this season.
The Avs visit Montreal December 2nd and welcome the Canadiens to Denver January 22nd.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Buffalo Sabres
The Avs barely beat out the struggling Sabres 3-2 on February 26th, 2020. This game included Martin Kaut’s first NHL goal on the power play, and a J.T. Compher winner a little past halfway of the third.
Of course, Buffalo has severely fallen off the last couple of seasons, which includes the trade of Taylor Hall and the continuing frustration of Jack Eichel not wanting to be there anymore. The Avs should take care of business against this struggling side.
The Avs visit upstate New York on December 22nd, and welcome the Sabres to Denver January 30th.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Ottawa Senators
When Ottawa last visited Denver, they were shut out 3-0 on February 11th, 2020. It extended the Avs win streak to five games, and saw multiple different players on the scoresheet once again.
The only player with a multi-point night was Nathan MacKinnon with two assists. Ottawa has been stuck in a rebuilding cycle the last few seasons, and will need some more time to get back to a playoff-caliber level team. Expect the Avs to take care of business of the Senators.
They welcome the Senators November 22nd to Denver, and visit them a couple weeks later on December 4th.
Colorado Avalanche vs. Detroit Red Wings
The famous rivalry between these two has fizzled out and is just a remanent of what it used to be, but the Avs had to work for their 2-1 win in Detroit on March 2nd, 2020. The struggling Red Wings went ahead early thanks to an Anthony Mantha finish, but couldn’t hold on for the upset win.
Logan O’Connor got the winning goal that night with only six minutes left in the second period, and hung on through the third. While the rivalry has died down, whenever these two teams play it’s always fun, even if they are not on the same level anymore.
The Avs and Red Wings see each other twice in the span of 10 days, first in Denver on December 10th and in Detroit on December 20th.
The Avs had the Atlantic’s number two seasons ago, and will look to continue that trend this season. How will they fare Avs fans? Next up, reviewing the last matchups against the Pacific Division, coming soon!
