The longest partial Lunar eclipse in this century is set to occur on Thursday and Friday, November 18 to 19 and can be viewed in Pasadena for a record three hours and 28 minutes, according to a NASA/JPL-Caltech advisory.

The partial eclipse, when the Moon slips into Earth’s shadow for a couple of hours, will take place overnight, starting just after 11 p.m. on the West Coast, with a maximum – or the mid-eclipse – at about 1 a.m. On the East Coast, observers will see it starting at a little after 2 a.m. Thursday, reaching its maximum at 4 a.m.

Weather permitting, the eclipse will be visible from any location where the Moon appears above the horizon during the event. That means people living throughout North and South America, Eastern Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Region can also view the partial eclipse at various times.

Pasadena residents may want to organize Lunar Eclipse watch parties if the weather is clear, but of course have to observe physical distancing or limit the watch party to family members only.

Partial lunar eclipses might not be quite as spectacular as total lunar eclipses, when the face of the Moon is completely covered in Earth’s shadow, but they occur more frequently, NASA said.

During some stages of a lunar eclipse, partial or total, the Moon can appear reddish. NASA said this is because the only remaining sunlight reaching the Moon at that point is from around the edges of the Earth, as seen from the Moon’s surface. From there, an observer during an eclipse would see all Earth’s sunrises and sunsets at once.

Explaining how lunar eclipses happen, NASA said the Moon’s orbital tilt remains fixed with respect to the stars throughout the year, meaning that it changes with respect to the Sun. About twice a year, this puts the Moon in just the right position to pass through the Earth’s shadow, causing a lunar eclipse.

As the Moon passes into the central part of the Earth’s shadow, called the umbra, it darkens dramatically. Once it’s entirely within the umbra, the Moon appears a dim red due to sunlight scattered through the Earth’s atmosphere.

During this partial eclipse, the Moon will not be entirely within Earth’s shadow, or umbra, but at least about 98 percent within it.
