Weather Talk: The last big April snowstorm was last April - Grand Forks Herald

Thursday's snowstorm, however unpopular, was hardly out of season. Last year, the final snowstorm of the winter came April 11-12. Grand Forks got 6.8" of snow and Fargo was buried under 6.1". It took about three days to melt. The April snow last year came just as the winter snow had finally melted away, just like it did this year. However, the winters of 2018-19 and 2019-20 have been very different experiences.

Last winter, most of the winter snow came in the second part of the winter. February and March of 2019 brought a barrage of snowstorms so that when the April storm came, it brought sentiments of, "Will this winter ever end?" Thursday's snowstorm came at the end of a long, slow, dry melt during March, bring a sentiment more to the tune of, "Where'd this come from?" Either way, an April snowfall or two in our region is a regular occurrence.
