Maybe the Michael Jordan documentary about his final season with the Bulls won’t be “The Last Dance,” as it is called, for there could be a similar series about Kobe Bryant and the Lakers in the works as well.
A personal film crew followed Bryant and covered all aspects of his 20th and final season in the league back in 2016, and that could be made into a documentary as well, ESPN reported.
Bryant, who tragically died Jan. 26 in a helicopter accident alongside his daughter Gianna and seven others, saw footage late last year and hired his own people, so he could have control to help in future endeavors after his playing days. Sources told ESPN that the plan was for the documentary to air years down the road and that is unlikely to change.
ESPN is currently airing a 10-part series into Jordan’s last year with the Bulls that ended with his sixth NBA championship.
Bryant’s final season didn’t turn out nearly as well. The Lakers missed the playoffs and went 17-65, though Bryant closed like a champion, scoring 60 points in a win over the Jazz. There were up to six camera crews at Staples Center for that night, in both locker rooms, the Lakers, practice facility, team plane, and training room
“They had unprecedented and, by far, greater access than anyone else ever,” John Black, the Lakers’ longtime public relations head, said. “We certainly allowed them to do everything we could within what the league would allow, and sometimes, with a wink and look-the-other-way, allowed them even more.”
