The Bay Area’s shelter-in-place order will be extended through the month of May, officials said Monday, with the current restrictions largely remaining in place.
Seven jurisdictions that banded together on the previous orders — Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties, plus the city of Berkeley — will release details of the latest order this week, officials said in a joint statement, to replace the current order, which was set to expire May 3.
The latest mandate will allow for the “limited easing of specific restrictions for a small number of lower-risk activities,” the statement read, but it’s not yet clear which activities would be included in such a category.
County health departments will also release a set of parameters — in line with Gov. Gavin Newsom’s six indicators — to guide further loosening of the shelter-in-place orders.Although the current shelter-in-place has substantially helped stem the spread of COVID-19, health officers are wary of lifting restrictions until cases and hospitalizations stabilize more, the statement continued.
“At this stage of the pandemic … it is critical that our collective efforts continue so that we do not lose the progress we have achieved together,” the statement read.
