All Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) will remain closed through the summer. LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner said on April 13, “We will not reopen school facilities until state and local health authorities tell us how it is safe and appropriate to do so.”
He added that students will not receive a failing grade in any of their classes this semester. “We don’t want to penalize those who may not have had access to technology or may be experiencing difficulties at home,” he said.
Graduations will be conducted virtually, and summer classes will be offered online.
LAUSD schools have been closed since March 16. Beutner initially announced on March 23 that schools would re-open on May 1.
Los Angeles’ shelter-in-place order was extended on April 10 to last through May 15. And beginning on April 10, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti mandated not just those working in essential businesses to wear masks, but anyone visiting essential businesses to wear one too.
Also on April 10, the city of Beverly Hills went one step further, stating that anybody outdoors for any reason in the city of Beverly Hills must wear a mask or face covering.
“We believe this action will help to protect and ultimately save lives,” Beverly Hills Mayor Lester Friedman said in a statement. “While we continue to ask our community members to remain at home, those who do go outside and the people they encounter will be safer.”
