Last Week Tonight, John Oliver dropped off another “brutal week” of coronaviruses dominating the news, but saw a silver lining in Dame Judi Dench’s dance skills on TikTok.
This said, Oliver dove into the misinformation spreading about coronavirus. This includes claims that microwaving mail can kill the virus and that breast milk and garlic can help prevent it. Extensive information led to the most recent protest against staying at home.
Olive points out that many people – including these protesters – think coronavirus is less deadly than the flu. Specifically, 40% of Americans think so, but in reality it is not. Coronavirus is more and more deadly. “Comparing coronavirus to the flu is like comparing Jeffrey Dahmer to OJ Simpson,” Oliver jokes. He adds, “Bad information is not only frustrating and dangerous, but it can force us to stay home longer.”

This is where he begins to clear up all the misinformation coming from people like television watchdog Kenneth Copeland and Rush Limbaugh, who said that “there is no panic” when the pandemic started.
“The problem is, many in conservative media have found it easy to fold this virus into stories they’ve been carefully building for decades,” Oliver said. Limbaugh was constantly pushing his “four corners of trickery” into his radio program. This includes: government, academia, science and media, all of which seem to be important groups to listen to during a public health crisis. Apart from that, he established his show as the only outlet worthy of faith – which gives him power.
Oliver than pivots to Fox News who, early on, reported the coronavirus warning as a hysterical attack by the media to sack Donald Trump. However, when people started dying from the virus, they went from rejecting the warning to undermining the deaths.
Fox News underestimated the danger of coronavirus early on but during the death penalty mounted them behind the scenes by suspending non-essential business trips and had its employees cancel personal meetings and summits. They also encouraged them to do business via Skype. According to Oliver, they did this because “they tend to believe these things on television only for money.”
He added, “The problem is Trump, who is this misinformation, and he is the target as well.” Trump draws talking points from what he sees – and that’s Fox News.
At one point, Steve Hilton said that healing is worse than the problem itself. Days later, Trump repeated this while in print.
“It’s pretty depressing to see the printer lose him what he heard the night before,” Oliver said. He adds that Trump has access to the top experts in the world, yet he still gets advice from watching TV.
Another bit of misinformation gleaned from Trump was when an alleged Stanford School of Medicine adviser named Gregory Rigano said that drug addiction chloroquine is a possible form of treatment for coronavirus. The following day, Trump took this information and ran with it although Stanford School of Medicine came forward to say Rigano was not an advisor and they were not involved in the study.
“The regenerative loop between Fox and Trump has advanced in the face of science here,” Oliver said. Fox News further recommended hydrochloride and as the media went on, the effectiveness of the drug went from being a scientific to a political one. He warned, “Anyone who wants more ethical studies on the drug will be seen on the right as a Trump hater. This said, because of all of the hydroxyloroquine talk, existing patients with lupus who need the drug could not fill their prescriptions.
“The skills needed to produce television and control are very different, unfortunately we have a president who does not know the difference,” Oliver said. Even in the beginning of his term, Trump told police officers to think of every day as an episode like a TV show where he defeats rivals.
“We have a network and a president who thrives on sharing nurturing each other in a time when we desperately need a unified response to a public health crisis,” states Oliver. The aforementioned protests were fueled by misinformation and also led Trump to tweet “FREE MINNESOTA!”, “FREE MICIGAN! and “FREE VIRGINIA!” All this at a time when 66% of Americans admit it is dangerous if staying home requires them early.
Oliver, like many of us, wants this all to end. And this is where he gets people, saying he knows people who have died of coronary heart disease. He also knows people who take hydroxylchlorine because they think it will give them immunity and he also knows people with wolves who lower their last doses of hydroxylchlorine.
“It bothers me fiercely,” he said bluntly before adding, “The fact is the quickest way to put an end to this is that we should all remain united in this very difficult task. The only way we can do that is if we have confidence and well. informed leadership, which we unfortunately do not. “
