There were three separate wrecks within a little over 30 minutes on N.C. 268 East Thursday evening.
The Wilkes Communications Center dispatched emergency personnel to the first collision, at the intersection of N.C. 268 and Abtco Road, at 5:58 p.m. Thursday. A pickup that was eastbound on N.C. 268 collided with the trailer portion of an 18-wheeler at the intersection, said Roaring River Fire Chief Dale Pierce.
Pierce said the tractor-trailer was making a left turn from Abtco Road onto N.C. 268 to go west toward North Wilkesboro when the wreck occurred.
Wilkes Emergency Medical Services transported the driver of the pickup, a 71-year-old man, to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston-Salem. Wilkes EMS Director Tim Pennington said the man was seriously injured. The driver was the only person in the pickup. The Wilkes Rescue Squad was also dispatched.
Pierce said the wreck resulted in traffic being blocked in both directions on N.C. 268 - at the Roaring River bridge on the east and at the Rock Creek Road intersection on the west. The N.C. Highway Patrol investigated the wreck.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to a wreck at the intersection of Elk Spur Street and N.C. 268 in West End Elkin at 6:26 p.m. Thursday. A pickup and a sport utility vehicle collided and the rear of the SUV crashed into a guard rail. Pennington said any injured people were taken to a hospital by private vehicle. The Elkin Police Department investigated and Pleasant Hill Fire and Rescue was dispatched. Elkin Fire & Rescue and Ronda Fire and Rescue also were dispatched.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to the third wreck at 6:33 p.m. Thursday. Pierce said a car pulling out from Arbor Grove Baptist Church Road onto N.C. 268 collided with a pickup on N.C. 268. Pennington said people in the two vehicles declined transport to a hospital. The Knotville Fire Department assisted Roaring River by responding to the wreck. The N.C. Highway Patrol investigated.
Emergency personnel said N.C. 268 was wet from rain and there was light fog during the time the three wrecks occurred.
