Iowa City's 50th Pride Festival will go on as planned, at least for the time being.
"We are still in discussion on our plans with Pride with a decision being made by the end of the month," Anthony Sivanthaphanith, the IC Pride president, told the Press-Citizen. "We already have an alternative plan if we do need to change the dates."
While other local events originally planned for the summer have been canceled or rescheduled — most recently the North Liberty Blues & BBQ Festival originally scheduled for July — IC Pride is still set to happen on June 19 and 20.
This year not only marks Sivanthaphanith's first time as president of IC Pride but also the 50th year of the IC Pride festival. The annual event was first held in 1970, a year after the Stonewall riots, meaning the local festival would have been among the first public pride celebrations in the country.
While some other national festivals have postponed their Pride mevent, such as Dallas Pride which pushed its celebration to the end of July, others, such as NYC Pride, are opting to hold the course and re-evaluate down the line.
According to Sivanthaphanith, the IC Pride board plans to confirm whether or not the festival occurs as planned on May 1. If Pride is delayed, the board has formulated an alternative plan to hold an event in fall while also exploring the possibility of digital programming options for June until then.
"We definitely want to have some type of celebration for our community," he said. "We've gone through a lot over the past more than 50 years, so it's kind of important to bring the community together and show that there's a lot to celebrate."
One of the other big events still tentatively scheduled to occur as planned are several summer festivals scheduled by Iowa City Summer of the Arts. While the first big festival is scheduled for June 5, the Friday Night Concert series — originally planned to start in late May and run through Aug. 28 — has already seen some date changes.
"We are still in a bit of a holding pattern regarding decisions on the summer depending on direction from the city and state," said Summer of the Arts Executive Director Lisa Barnes in an e-mail, "however, we have already canceled the two Friday Night Concerts in May."
The canceled performances were planned to feature City High and West High Jazz Ensembles on May 22 and Annie Savage and Flash in a Pan on May 29. If no further changes occur with the lineup the first performance will occur June 12 on the Ped Mall at 6:30 p.m. with Brian Johannesen and the Jordan Sellergren Band.
A full list of the Friday Night Concert lineups currently planned is available on the Summer of the Arts website.
