Additional COVID-19 can symptoms occur, but are unusual - The Times

While some symptoms of COVID-19 can sometimes vary, UPMC health officials say the three primary symptoms — fever, cough and shortness of breath — haven’t changed.

Fever, cough and shortness of breath. Those are the three most common symptoms of the virus that causes COVID-19.

But some have reported feeling additional symptoms that also could point to the novel coronavirus.

Gastrointestinal issues as well as a decrease sense of taste and smell are a few notable symptoms some physicians believe could demonstrate a person is positive for COVID-19.

Dr. Don Yealy, chair of the department of emergency medicine at UPMC and Pitt, called those symptoms unusual, but that clinicians should still note when those symptoms occur.

“Early on (the virus) does seem to change people’s sense of smell and taste,” he said. “We’ve sent out reminders to our clinicians (to look for that).”

Yealy said clinicians look at the whole picture, not just one or two symptoms.

Looking at a person’s loss of taste and smell is “part of the clinician picture, just like the respiratory symptoms.”

Dr. Nicole Wheeler, infectious disease with UPMC Passavant, said that the symptoms surrounding a COVID-19 diagnosis haven’t necessarily changed.

Wheeler said they’re mostly concerned viral respiratory problems or if an individual has been in close contact to a person who’s tested positive for COVID-19.

Some reports show GI issues and a decrease in taste and smell, Wheeler said.

“Those are more unique symptoms,” she said. “Still the primary symptoms are respiratory symptoms.”

Fever, cough and shortness of breath are seen in 80 to 90 percent of cases, said Dr. James Boyle, vice president of medical affair at UPMC Passavant and primary care physician at Steel City Internal Medicine in Franklin Township.

Whereas GI symptoms and loss of taste and smell are seen in about 10 to 20 percent of cases.

“You can’t put your COVID blinders on,” Boyle said, noting that clinicians still must conduct a full screening and take all symptoms into account.
