Changes to Anti-Indigenous Place Names Slow to Occur - The Corvallis Advocate

On Nov. 19, Secretary for the Interior Deb Haaland motioned to nationally eliminate the word “sq*aw” — a racist and misogynistic slur used against Indigenous women — from place names across the U.S. Oregon made a similar decision in 2001, although the slur is still referenced in the names of over 50 statewide locations.

Unfortunately, changing names like these takes time, according to Oregon State University assistant professor and consultant to the Oregon Geographic Names Board, Dr. David Lewis

He explained that the process requires extensive research and talks with the Tribes efforts that Haaland claimed will be done generally “without commission.” However, Lewis said that if they receive financial assistance, the changes could be possible within a year’s time.

“If they really want this to happen,” Lewis told OPB, “they would offer some sort of funding that we could pay people for sometimes hours and hours and hours of work, looking through the languages, trying [to] figure out an appropriate replacement either back to the original name, or to a name that we create based on the characteristics of the site.”

In Oregon, a new name proposal is required for each name change. These proposals are then reviewed by the Name Board, where they are accepted, denied, or deferred. Oregon had five new name proposals for places that reference the slur under review as of this past June all of which either were deferred or requested further investigation.
