Kirk Ferentz Last Living Head Hawkeye Football Coach - Hawkeye Nation

tampilansberita.blogspot.com

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The passing of Jerry Burns on Wednesday means that Kirk Ferentz is the only living Iowa football coach. Period.

Twenty-five men have been paid to be the Hawkeyes’ football coach, starting with E.A. Dalton in 1892. It is remarkable that just two men, Ferentz and Hayden Fry, have been Iowa’s head coach since 1979.

Burns lived longer than any other former Hawkeye coach. He was 94. Only two other coaches reached 90 years old. Forest Evashevski, who had-picked Burns to be his successor, died on Oct. 30, 2009 at 91 years of age. Fry was 90 when he passed away on Dec. 17, 2019.

Two other former head football coaches died in the last decade. Frank Lauterbur (1971-1973) was 88 when he died in 2013. Ray Nagel (1966-1970) died at 87 years old in 2015.

Bob Commings (1974-1978), who preceded Fry as Iowa coach, passed away on Feb. 20, 1992 at 59 years of age.
