Coronavirus cases shot up dramatically last week, representing the latest inflection point in a yearlong pandemic many Oregonians are anxious to put behind.
The Oregon Health Authority recorded 2,456 confirmed or presumed infections for the week ending Sunday, March 28, up 28% from the previous week. Cases rose despite a 10% decrease in week-to-week testing.
Last week’s spike marked the beginning of the end of a month-long plateau, with previous weekly counts alternating between ups and downs.
But the current week, which doesn’t end until Sunday, is on pace to exceed last week’s totals – and new modeling suggests another wave may be coming.
That wave, fueled by more contagious variants and less business restrictions, is still expected to be less severe than the winter crest thanks to growing vaccinations.
ZIP codes in the Portland area saw a sharp uptick in cases, with one Gresham ZIP code supplanting areas of Grants Pass for the most new cases. Per capita spread remains highest in southern Oregon.
The Oregonian/OregonLive is monitoring state coronavirus data, reporting by ZIP code the areas with the greatest weekly changes. Our analysis also highlights the areas with the most new cases in relation to population.
