Another blanket of snow covered the Front Range on Tuesday morning. Most locations around Denver saw 3 to 6 inches of new snow, while cities in the foothills got between 6 and 12 inches. It was the second spring storm in a week to bring accumulating snow to the Front Range, and yet another system is predicted to arrive on Wednesday.
That’s how spring goes in Colorado. Denver’s average last snowfall is April 28.
The latest Denver has ever seen snowfall is June. On June 2, 1951 light snow fell, and 0.3 inches of snow was reported. On May 29, 1975, Denver reported a heavier snow. That day, 5.6 inches of snow fell in the city. And over the last 5 years, Denver has seen its last snowfall arrive between April 16 and May 21.
Late spring snow is something we should expect. Heavy, wet snow is also normal. Denver gets an average of 6.8 inches of snow during the month of April. This year has brought more than that. So far, DIA has reported 10 inches of snow for the month. That’s more than average, but not high enough to make it into the top 20 snowiest Aprils Denver has ever seen.

We could add to our snowfall total in the coming days. High temperatures will be in the low 40s through Wednesday afternoon along the I-25 corridor. The next round of snow will arrive to the Front Range Wednesday afternoon, but does not bring a lot of accumulation. Most locations from Castle Rock, north to Fort Collins will see less than half an inch of snow by Wednesday night.
