tampilansberita.blogspot.com

The USDA Forest Service anticipates conducting prescribed burns (1, 2 or 3) on the Fort Pierre National Grassland sometime in the next several weeks.

Ignition will only occur if suitable weather and fuel conditions are present. Burns would be completed following direction in the Stony Butte and West 83 Prescribed Burn Plans.

Potential burn sites include:

  • a 370-acre portion of the Chester Middle Pasture in Lyman County
  • a 294-acre portion of the Far West Pasture in Jones County
  • the entirety of the 823-acre Sioux East Pasture in Lyman County

The purpose of these prescribed burns is to increase the dominance and diversity of native vegetation. Objectives include improvements to livestock forage and wildlife habitat quality, as well as reductions in fuel loading.

Adjacent landowners, visible homeowners and local fire and law enforcement departments will be contacted prior to ignition. Smoke from the fires may be visible from US Highway 83, Interstate 90 and the communities of Draper, Fort Pierre, Kennebec, Murdo, Pierre, Presho and Vivian.

Dan Svingen, District Ranger for the Fort Pierre Ranger District which manages the Fort Pierre National Grassland, says they’ll conduct these burns with additional help. Personnel may be recruited from local volunteer fire departments, state agencies and other federal agencies.

Anyone with questions may leave a voice mail and call-back information at the Fort Pierre Ranger District, 605-224-5517.
