You have to stay on your toes during this COVID-19 era football season. That was evidenced by the fact that Northwestern Lehigh replaced Pen Argyl for Friday night’s game.
Regardless, the lehighvalleylive.com staff is back to make predictions. Check out our picks as the schedule doubles (!) in size for Week 2.
Overall records:
Kyle Craig: 2-0.
Josh Folck: 2-0.
Brad Wilson: 2-0.
Desmond Boyle: 1-1.
Week 2 in the spotlight
Muhlenberg (0-0) at Notre Dame (1-0)
Time: 7 p.m. Friday.
Site: Notre Dame High School.
Boyle: This may be an unpredictable fall, but sometimes you have to keep the picks simple. The Muhls have one win in two years while Notre Dame overcame a slow start against Pine Grove to win in Week 1. The Crusaders roll to a win at home in Week 2. Pick: Notre Dame.
Craig: Did someone make the Muhlenberg College joke? (Scans entries.) Ah, Brad. Well, so much for my plan. Muhlenberg High’s program has really struggled lately and a trip to District 11 isn’t going to help. Pick: Notre Dame.
Folck: Notre Dame was in a battle last week against Pine Grove. It might not be that tough this week. Muhlenberg went 0-10 last season. Pick: Notre Dame.
Wilson: I’d have better luck picking this game if it was Muhlenberg College. What’s a Muhlenberg? Who knows? Stick with what we do know, Collin Quintano and Matt Frauen Jr. and all them. Pick: Notre Dame.
Wilson (0-0) at Palisades (0-1)
Time: 7 p.m. Friday.
Site: Walter T. Rohrer Stadium.
Boyle: This was one of the best games in the area last season with the Warriors winning on a touchdown with only 20 seconds left. Given how even the matchup is, the Pirates might have the edge after they were one of three teams from the area to play a game last week. Pick: Palisades.
Craig: Palisades gave Northwestern Lehigh a run for its money last week and, surely, having a game under their belt will be an advantage for the Pirates. However, with experience at quarterback, wide receiver and running back, Wilson’s offense should get out of the blocks quickly. Pick: Wilson.
Folck: The Warriors scored 15 fourth-quarter points to rally past Palisades last season. This should be another close game. Mason Smeland was impressive for the Pirates in a loss against Northwestern last week and he could have another big game here. Pick: Palisades.
Wilson: Even while they lost, the Pirates impressed in an opening defeat to a deep and talented Northwestern Lehigh team. If they play as well here, they’ll win, in a close one. Pick: Palisades.
Allentown Central Catholic (0-0) at Whitehall (0-0)
Time: 7 p.m. Friday.
Site: Zephyr Stadium.
2019 records: Allentown Central Catholic 8-5; Whitehall 0-10.
Boyle: The Zephyrs will be better than last year’s 0-10 squad, but Allentown Central Catholic has too much talent coming back for Whitehall to return to the win column this week. Look for Matt Rauscher and Jayden Williams to have a big game in a Vikings win. Pick: Allentown Central Catholic.
Craig: Allentown Central Catholic is one of the teams to beat in the EPC this fall. The Vikings will find success in the air and on the ground here. Pick: Allentown Central Catholic.
Folck: The Vikings return plenty of talent from last season’s team. Matt Rauscher and Jayden Williams are a difficult combination for a defense to stop. Whitehall put up quite a challenge last season against Central Catholic, but once again not sure if the Zephyrs will have enough. Pick: Allentown Central Catholic.
Wilson: Vikes have lots of offensive weapons back -- that should carry the day. Pick: Allentown Central Catholic.
Berks Catholic (0-0) vs. Northwestern Lehigh (1-0)
Time: 7:10 p.m. Friday.
Site: Tiger Stadium.
Boyle: Northwestern showed it won’t have a problem putting up points this year in its Week 1 win over Palisades. Berks Catholic, however, might be on another level after dominating the District 3 4A bracket for the better part of the last decade. Pick: Berks Catholic.
Craig: Considering Berks Catholic is a last-minute replacement for Pen Argyl, you really have to wonder what sort of opponent-specific preparation has been accomplished. Berks Catholic is usually pretty darn good and schedules competitively. Pick: Berks Catholic.
Folck: This will be a tough test for Northwestern on short notice. With Pen Argyl unable to play, the Tigers added a strong program to the schedule in Berks Catholic. The Tigers will need good performances from Nick Henry and Justin Holmes to secure a victory. Pick: Northwestern Lehigh.
Wilson: Here’s another one of the whozit/whatzit brigade. Berks Catholic hasn’t played a game yet, and even if they had, who knows? Northwestern looked generally good against Palisades, good enough for us. Pick: Northwestern Lehigh.
