CHICO — The Butte County Sheriff’s Office on Friday released the name of the last victim of the North Complex West Zone fire as Linda Longenbach, 71, of Berry Creek.

In a press release, the Sheriff’s Office indicated that Longenbach was found on the roadway on Handkirk Lane on Sept. 10, as was Paul Winer, 68, of Berry Creek. One was in the roadway approximately 10 feet from an ATV, and the other was inside a vehicle. Winer was previously identified through ANDE DNA.

“During the investigation detectives determined Paul and Linda spoke with a relative in the afternoon of Sept. 8 and said they were aware of the fire and chose not to immediately evacuate at that time,” the press release reported.

With the identification of Longenbach, all 15 victims have now been identified. The others are: Larry Holder, 61; Josiah Williams, 16; Millicent Catarancuic, 77; Khawar Bhatti, 58; Philip Rubel, 68; Jorge Hernandez-Juarez, 26; Sandra Butler, 75; John Butler 79,  Mark Delagardie, 61; Kin Lee, 64; and Susan Zurz, 76, all of Berry Creek; Randy Harrell, 67; and Jacob Albright, 74, both of Feather Falls.

All missing person cases in the fire have been resolved, and as of Friday, no additional human remains have been found.

Containment progress

After enjoying a weather-calm night, firefighters battling the North Complex West Zone fires are preparing for a windy weekend starting Saturday.

As of Friday morning, the fire, which killed 15 foothill residents, is 73 percent contained, having burned 84,580 acres.

The National Weather Service is warning of weather conditions under which fires easily start. Officials are looking at those conditions — hot, windy and dry — from Saturday through Monday.

In addition, the eastern foothills are under a PG&E public safety power shutoff watch, meaning a power outage is possible over that time period.

Fires are actively burning in the Forbestown and  Bucks Lake areas, as well as east of Little Grass Valley Reservoir.

Firefighters worked overnight to reinforce fire lines and kill hot spots. Additionally, post-fire repair work began in the Cherokee area, and  Cal Fire-Butte County officials report that work will expand over the next few weeks.

Displaced residents are being directed to the assistance center at Feather River Parks and Recreation Gymnastics Academy, 1875 Feather River Blvd., and the Federal Emergency Management Agency center across the street at 2000 Feather River Blvd. in Oroville.

The hours of both centers are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m Saturday. The centers are closed Sundays.

FEMA registration will close Oct. 21 at the center.

Evacuation orders are still in place for Berry Creek above Whispering Chapel Lane including Encina Grande Road and Big Ridge Road, as well as Brush Creek and Forbestown above Westar Court.  Clipper Mills is under an evacuation warning.

The fire has destroyed 2,248 structures and damaged 112. The North Complex itself has burned 304,492 acres and is 78 percent contained.

Law enforcement escort

The Butte County Sheriff Office has created an online form for residents to request law enforcement escorts to areas that remain under evacuation orders.

The link for the online request is https://ift.tt/3i5x7OO

The fire information call center will be accepting calls for escort requests. The call center number is 530-552-3010, and callers can get information about evacuation notices and evacuation map assistance.

The call center will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, however, the sheriff’s office hopes that escort requests are made online because of the anticipated high volume of use.

Members of the Community Emergency Response Team will be answering calls.
