What the world was like the last time the Browns were above .500: This Week in the Cleveland Browns - cleveland.com

tampilansberita.blogspot.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio – If the Browns can beat Washington on Sunday afternoon, they will leave a game with a record above .500 for the first time in nearly six years. The last time that happened was on Dec. 7, 2014, when the Browns fell to 7-6 after a 25-24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

A week later, Johnny Manziel had his notoriously bad debut against the Bengals. The Browns lost, 30-0, and have never been above .500 since.

They’ve been .500 multiple times in the past two seasons but failed to get above that mark.

It’s just one of many marks that show just how bad the franchise has been. But getting back above .500 would be a step in the right direction.

The Browns, the NFL and the world were a very different place on Dec. 7.. Here are some examples of what the world was like that weekend.

• Baker Mayfield finished his first year at Oklahoma after walking onto the football team prior to the 2014 season. He was not eligible to play after coming over from Texas Tech.

• Nick Chubb had 1,281 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns as a freshman at Georgia at the end of the regular season. On Dec. 30, he rushed for 266 yards and two TDs in a 37-14 win vs. Louisville in the Belk Bowl.

• Odell Beckham Jr. was on his way to becoming the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year with the Giants. Two weeks prior, he made his legendary one-handed TD catch against the Cowboys.

• Kevin Stefanski was in his first season as tight ends coach with the Vikings. On the same day the Browns fell to 7-6, his Vikings beat the Jets in overtime, 30-24, when Teddy Bridgewater connected with Jarius Wright for an 87-yard touchdown pass.

• Myles Garrett had been more than a week removed from the last game of his freshman season at Texas A&M. He was spectacular that year, recording 11 sacks to break Jadeveon Clowney’s SEC freshman record.

• The No. 1 movie at the box office that weekend was The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1. It made more than $22 million from Dec. 5-7, maintaining its top spot at the box office for the third weekend in a row.

• Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” was atop the Billboard Hot 100.

• LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love and the Cavaliers were in the midst of an eight-game winning streak. On Dec. 5, they handedly beat the Toronto Raptors, 105-91, led by 24 points and 13 assists from James.

• Ohio State earned a spot in the inaugural College Football Playoff that, at the time, was considered controversial. The Buckeyes had blanked Wisconsin, 59-0, in the Big Ten Championship Game the night prior. OSU went on to win the national championship in January 2015.

Six years is obviously a long time, but the Browns can erase more of their negative records with a win on Sunday.

On Browns news

Kevin Stefanski says its too early to label Browns' offense – The Browns leaned on their running game to the tune of 215 yards in Week 2 against the Bengals. But on Friday, Stefanski said that it’s way too early to say what the Browns' offense is whether it will stay run heavy or if it will involve more passing.

What to expect from Odell Beckham Jr. in this offense – Ellis L. Williams went to the film of what Stefon Diggs did with Stefanski last season in Minnesota to offer a guess at what Beckham’s role could be this season.

Jedrick Wills has confidence in himself despite Chase Young challenge – The Browns' rookie left tackle has had a solid start to his NFL career. But he will get a very tough test on Sunday against Washington rookie defensive end Chase Young, who is tied for first in the league in sacks. Wills said he’s confident in what he can do with as he gets ready to try and block Young.

Mack Wilson believes knee injury was “karma” – The Browns will probably get their second-year linebacker back in some capacity against Washington after he suffered a hyperextended knee on Aug. 18. When he talked to reporters, he believed the injury was “karma” for giving Nick Chubb a concussion the day before.

Stories from around the league

Jarvis Landry, Beckham undeterred in social justice fight – On Wednesday, a grand jury in Kentucky indicted only one officer involved in the shooting of Breonna Taylor, and the officer was charged with wanton endangerment. The two Browns receivers, who have been very vocal in the fight for social justice, spoke this week about how they will continue to fight despite the verdict.

How Cleveland helped Jason Wright become Washington president – Jason Wright was with the Browns for four seasons. He now returns to Cleveland as president of the Washington Football Team. Wright spoke to Mary Kay Cabot about how his time with the Browns prepared him for his current job.
