JOLIET, IL — If you were wondering whether the city of Joliet might cancel trick-or-treating for kids this Halloween because of coronavirus concerns, that does not appear to be the case. Joliet City Councilman Larry Hug posted an announcement on his Facebook page this week informing his followers that Joliet plans to allow for trick-or-treating on Oct. 31.
Hug indicated that Joliet plans to allow trick-or-treating from 3 to 6 p.m. since Halloween falls on a Saturday year. In years past, the city allowed trick-or-treating from 4 to 7 p.m. when Halloween fell on a weekday, he said.
"The decision to participate is up to the parents," Hug announced on Facebook. "We encourage people to be safe and be careful and follow the state health department guidelines and group sizes concerning masks, social distancing and group sizes as it pertains to outdoor activities."
By 3 p.m., Joliet City Hall issued a news release confirming that trick-or-treating will go on.
"The City of Joliet has received many inquiries concerning Halloween and trick-or-treating for 2020. Joliet does not have plans to cancel trick-or-treating and believes residents have a choice whether to participate in the activity or not," the city announced. "The City of Joliet's trick-or-treating hours will be from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, for those who choose to participate."
Joliet officials urged residents to adhere to the following guidelines on Halloween:
- If you do not want to participate in passing out candy, do not turn on your porch light. In addition, there is a printable page available here or at City Hall (150 W. Jefferson) for display on your front door so trick-or-treaters know you are not participating.
- Wear a mask or face covering when you cannot socially distance from other individuals.
- Stay home if you are feeling sick.
- Follow the Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines for group sizes.
