After 12 years of dazzling San Franciscans at its glamorous Indian restaurant, Dosa on Fillmore St. has permanently closed.
It’s the last San Francisco outpost for owners Anjan and Emily Mitra who recently shuttered the business after months of financial struggle that was only partly brought on by COVID-19. The San Francisco Chronicle first reported the closure.
Since the shutdown, the Dosa location at 1700 Fillmore St. had remained closed and as its lease was coming up for renewal, The Chronicle reports that Anjan made the decision to hand over the keys. The space has since gone up for lease.
“Given the nature of the business and the high risk of restaurants compounded by COVID, (the landlord) lost confidence in us,” Anjan told The Chronicle. “We were already struggling at Fillmore; once COVID hit, we didn’t have a chance. Packing up was the better choice for us — really, the only choice for us.”
SFGATE reached out to Anjan for comment but did not hear back by the time of publication.

When Dosa on Fillmore St. first opened its doors, it offered guests South Indian cuisine with a California twist. Its cocktail program included spice-infused libations that included a turmeric mule and a Bengali gimlet. The setting offered an upscale dining experience with high ceilings, vast windows and a bar with ornate chandeliers.
But last year, Dosa filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy just a month after closing its original Valencia St. location. Reasons behind that closure were attributed to an increase in rent and labor costs that made it difficult to operate.
"While we strongly believe that these are necessary and excellent benefits for our staff, it places an unsustainable burden on San Francisco restaurants," Anjan told Eater of the Valencia St. closure in 2019.

After the filing, Anjan told Eater that he hoped it would “provide them some relief with creditors and allow them to get their business back on track.”
It’s not a final goodbye for Dosa, however. Dosa by Dosa, the fast-casual version in Oakland, will remain open for takeout. Dosa will also continue to sell ready-to-eat meals at Whole Foods stores and operate a central commissary kitchen where it’ll prepare meals available for delivery in San Francisco, Berkeley, Palo Alto, San Jose, Daly City, and Belmont via third-party delivery apps.
The recent Dosa closure comes as other San Francisco businesses have shuttered in recent weeks. Beach Street Grill closed after 15 years and The Riddler, a stylish Hayes Valley bar closed after three years.
Dosa was located at 1700 Fillmore St. in San Francisco.
