MARSHALL, MI – The last remaining Kmart in Michigan is closing this weekend, ending 59 years of business in the company’s home state.
The Marshall location, 15861 Michigan Ave., is expected to close on Sunday, Nov. 21, according to Marshall City Manager Tom Tarkiewicz.
Kmart has deep roots in Michigan going back to 1899 when Sebastian Spering Kresge opening a five-and-dime store in downtown Detroit, according to the company website.
The S.S. Kresge Company discount stores expanded for decades until the company pivoted to operating department stores.
The first Kmart store opened in Garden City, Michigan in 1962.
Within four years, the discount big box store was operating 162 locations across the United States. At its peak, Kmart operated about 2,500 locations worldwide.
Plagued with financial issues, Kmart filed for bankruptcy in 2002 and was purchased by Sears Holding Company three years later. Kmart then continued to struggle, shuttering most locations in the United States over the past two decades.
Only six Kmart stores are expected to still be in business by the end of the year, CNN reported.
“The biggest concern is for Marshall and Albion residents who do not drive and must use our transit service to shop. With Kmart closing, they do not have any store to shop for household and personal needs,” Tarkiewicz wrote in an email to MLive.
Other shuttered Kmart stores in Michigan have been occupied by new retailers like Family Farm & Home, a KFC restaurant, Dollar Tree, a U-Haul facility and T.J. Maxx. A Norton Shores Kmart building sat empty for 15 years before being demolished and replaced with a new healthcare facility.
Tarkiewicz said the Marshall Kmart building does not have a new tenant yet.
