An Alabama death from January 2020 is among four being investigated as the country’s first connected to COVID-19 as the CDC continues to probe the origins of the coronavirus in America, according to a report.

The Alabama death, along with four others in Kansas, California and Wisconsin, is being looked at by Robert Anderson the CDC’s chief of mortality statistics, in an attempt to get a clearer picture of how COVID spread beyond China, the New York Times reported.

But Dr. Michael Worobey, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Arizona, told the Times he doubted the four cases in question acquired COVID in the United States, adding that it was possible they traveled to China, where the virus originated.

“My guess is that they’re probably not all real, maybe not even any of them,” Worobey said. “If any of them are real, they’d be travel-linked cases, and that’s conceivable.”

According to Worobey’s research, COVID unlikely spread beyond China before the middle of December 2019.

All four of the deaths were reclassified this year as being COVID-related, the Times reported, althoguh it’s unclear whether the reclassification was due to the deceased’s symptoms or through blood or tissue sample testing.
