WENATCHEE — A Yakima woman whose 11-year-old son and two other people died in a Blewett Pass collision last year was summoned Wednesday to Chelan County court on charges of vehicular homicide.
In May, Chelan County prosecutors filed three felony counts of vehicular homicide against Marjorie Andrea Acevedo, 44, who was scheduled to make her first court appearance this week. Killed in the Aug. 28 wreck were Acevedo’s 11-year-old son Jonathan, who was a passenger in her vehicle; and motorist Majelia A. Delgado, 19, and her father Fermin A. Delgado, 63, from Seattle.
Washington State Patrol troopers say Acevedo was traveling north in the southbound lane about 6 p.m., passing two northbound vehicles just below the crest of Blewett at milepost 170, when her Toyota Sequoia SUV struck the Delgados’ oncoming Chevy S10 pickup, which was traveling in the southbound passing lane.
Northbound traffic had built up behind an RV that was was moving slower than the 60mph speed limit on the downhill Blewett slope, troopers said. One of the two vehicles in the collision spun off and struck the RV after initial impact, but no one on board was injured.
Jonathan, riding in Acevedo’s rear seat, was pronounced dead at the scene, as were the Delgados. Acevedo suffered multiple broken bones in the crash and had to be extricated from the Sequoia for transport to Harborview Medical Center.
Troopers initially suspected DUI as a cause in the crash, but Acevedo was not charged with that offense. Tests of her blood showed no sign of alcohol consumption and only inactive metabolic residues of THC use, court records show. Acevedo allegedly admitted smoking a small amount of cannabis much earlier in the day.
