EURO 2020 Betting: England vs Germany Last 16 Odds, Lineups and Tips

WHAT: Euro 2020, Last 16
LINE: England +150 | Draw +230 | Germany +195
KICK OFF: Tuesday, June 29th, 12PM EST
WHERE: Wembley Stadium, London, England
WATCH: ESPN, TUDN, Univision

This is one of the marquee ties of the Last 16 the list of iconic footballing moments between these two sides is long.

  • “They think it’s all over… it is now!” when Geoff Hurst scored the final goal in Engalnd’s 4-1 win over Germany in the 1966 World Cup final.
  • Paul Gascoigne tearing up in the 1990 World Cup semifinal after receiving a yellow card knowing he will miss the final.
  • Gareth Southgate missing his penalty in the Euro 96 semifinal.
  • In 2001 England smashing Germany 5-1 in Munich in a World Cup qualifier.
  • During England’s 4-1 defeat to Germany at the 2010 World Cup, we had Frank Lampard’s ghost goal. His long-range effort crashed off the bar, bounced behind the goal line, and back out but none of the officials saw it.

Sportsbooks have made England (+440) third favorites and Germany (+600) fourth favorites to win Euro 2020. At those prices, I think it’s worth putting money behind both because the winner of this game will have a straightforward path to the final. Sweden or Ukraine are up next and Denmark or the Czech Republic awaits them in the semifinals.

ENGLAND POSSIBLE STARTING XI

Euro 2020 Betting: England Last 16 Starting Lineup

Gareth Southgate will be happy he has his strongest defense available. Harry Maguire’s return against the Czech Republic was successful playing the whole 90 minutes and keeping a clean sheet. He will partner John Stones in central defense with Luke Shaw and Kyle Walker selected as full-backs.

There is talk Southgate is going with a back three for this game. If that happens I think we will see Walker drop into central defense with Maguire and Stones. Shaw and Reece James will play as wing-backs.

I’m confident Southgate will stick with Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice as his two defensive midfielders. This game is too big to take a risk on Jordan Henderson’s form and fitness. Jack Grealish will keep his spot with Phil Foden returning to the starting lineup after being left out of the squad for the 1-0 win over the Czech Republic.

I’m still unconvinced by Raheem Sterling despite being the only player to score for England at the tournament. Jadon Sancho would bring so much more in the final third and Southgate needs to give him a chance. Sancho has racked up 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 appearances for Borussia Dortmund and is the one player Germany fears. He has played against Germany’s defenders for the last four seasons and knows how to get at them.

Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell will become available on the morning of the game after serving their covid quarantine for interacting with Billy Glimour. It’s farcical they were singled out and Scotland’s players and backroom staff were allowed to continue despite training, traveling, sharing a changing room, and interacting with Gilmour on a daily basis.

GERMANY POSSIBLE STARTING XI

Euro 2020 Betting: Germany Last 16 Starting Lineup

Joachim Löw is all in on his 3-4-3 wing-back system despite struggling against Hungary. They came from behind twice to snatch a point and take second spot in Group F.

Leon Goretzka was the hero drilling the ball past Péter Gulácsi in the 84th minute. He is one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the world and has to start in central midfield alongside Toni Kroos. 6’2″ Goretzka is stacked and brings more physicality than ilkay Gündogan.

Thomas Müller will replace Leroy Sané after recovering from his knee injury. He was expected to be out until the quarterfinals but was able to make the bench against Hungary and came on in the 67th minute.

I would bring Niklas Süle into the starting lineup. He stands at 6’5″ and has ridiculous pace for a man of his size, clocking a top speed of 34.8 km/h this season, making him Bayern Munich’s fastest player. That’s quite a feat with a team that contains Alphonso Davies, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, and Sané.

ENGLAND VS GERMANY BETTING TIPS

This betting tip comes with the disclaimer that I am going with my heart over everything else. The winner of this match faces a favorable path to the final, and I would love to see England reach the final of a major international tournament at least once in my lifetime.

We’ve seen this German side can be got at but I’m also not convinced by Southgate’s cautious approach. I think that could be England’s undoing, not looking to kill games off. To be fair, they have managed games really well, which could be the key to them lifting the trophy on July 11th. We do have home advantage playing at Wembley.

Back the Three Lions book their ticket to the quarterfinals in 90 minutes.

BETTING TIP: England Money Line +150

We have seen in these Last 16 ties to expect the unexpected, and we all loved watching the chaos unfold in Spain vs Croatia and France vs Switzerland; it’s why we love this game. Four of the six knockout matches have finished over 2.5 goals, and we all want another memorable day of football.

Embrace the chaos.

BETTING TIP: Both Teams To Score YES and Over 2.5 Goals +143
