New Jersey police officers are among the highest paid in the nation, with the average cop earning a salary of more than $95,000 last year.

But if you’re wondering where officers earn the most money, look no further than Bergen County.

Of the top 25 paying police departments in the state, 22 are located in the wealthy, high-cost, suburban county, according to active pension records, which exclude overtime, work details and other compensation that often boosts officer pay significantly.

Bergen County had two departments in which the average officer in 2020 earned a salary of more than $150,000: East Rutherford, the site of the Meadowlands Complex, and Alpine, a tiny borough that is among New Jersey’s most exclusive, with comedian Chris Rock and other celebrities calling it home.

“Of course we try to rein it in,” said Alpine Mayor Paul Tomasko. “But we think we have an experienced, top-quality police department, the best ever in my several decades of elected service. We also have not had a retirement in several years, one or more of which would reduce the average.”

The exceptions to Bergen County in the top 25 are Edison in Middlesex County ($142,588 average salary), which is the largest community to make the list; Cedar Grove in Essex County ($134,831 average) and Eatontown in Monmouth County ($132,927).

On the other side, the lowest paid police were largely in South Jersey, or part of public safety departments at the state’s public colleges and universities.

In Hi-Nella, a borough of less than 1,000 people in Camden County, three officers earned an average of just $26,670 in 2020, according to pension records. They were followed by Gibbsboro, also in Camden County, ($42,464 average salary, population 2,169). Next was Elmer, a Salem County community of 1,436, where a single officer in the pension system earned $44,830.

The regional variations in pay can be seen in a county-by-county breakdown of what police earn. At the top is Bergen County, where local and county police had an average salary of nearly $126,000. At the bottom is Cumberland County ($72,935 average) and Salem County ($78,299 average).
