Here is the next in a series highlighting Grand Rapids area football teams. MLive is taking a look at Grandville below:

By the time the playoffs arrived last year, Grandville’s football team was on its fourth quarterback.

That’s how badly the injury bug had bitten the Bulldogs.

The fact that the Bulldogs were in contention for an OK Red Conference championship in Week 9, qualified for the postseason and averaged 34 points a game showed just how deep and talented Grandville was. The Bulldogs return key players from last year, too, so expectations remain high.

Here’s what to expect this fall.

COACH: Eric Stiegel

LAST YEAR: The Bulldogs bounced back from a 4-5 record in 2018 to finish 7-3. Grandville defeated Rockford 30-3 in Week 8, marking the second time in 17 tries that the Bulldogs have beaten the Rams. That pulled the two teams into a first-place tie in the OK Red, but Grandville lost in Week 9 to Caledonia, ending its Red title hopes. Grand Haven then beat Grandville in the first round of the playoffs.

KEY RETURNERS:

The Bulldogs feature one of the Grand Rapids area’s most talented backfields in Cam Terry, Marcel Love and Zac VanderWest. Terry has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of the past two seasons, while Love, and all-conference halfback, led Grandville in touchdowns.

“Zac is a 210-pound kid,” Stiegel said. “He is our hammer who can get from zero to five yards really quick and pound you. We expect big things from those guys both running and blocking.”

Stiegel said the Bulldogs will be looking at junior Ian Sanders and sophomore Carson Smith to handle the quarterbacking duties. Sanders received plenty of playing time last fall, while Smith made his first varsity start in the playoffs against Grand Haven.

WHAT IS GRANDVILLE’S STRENGTHS?

“We have some depth on the offensive line,” Stiegel said "We get both of our tackles back and we have some experience at guard, too. We have a lot of kids back on defense - some were starters, and some saw a lot of time.

“We are a senior heavy group with a lot of kids coming back.”

WHO IS THE CONFERENCE FAVORITE?

“I think we are in a position if we play well we can beat anybody in the league,” Stiegel said. “But also, we know that anybody in the league can beat us. It is going to be a back and forth division.”
