Daily new U.S. coronavirus infections rose slightly but continued their downward longer-term trend, as some states worked to manage outbreaks through natural disasters and new information emerged about the complexities of the disease.

The country reported 38,045 new cases on Monday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. That is up from 34,567 on Sunday but still an improvement from last week, when cases topped 40,000 most days and neared 50,000 on some.

In all, some 5.74 million people in the U.S. have been infected, a little less than a quarter of the global total, according to the Johns Hopkins data. There have been 177,279 deaths in the U.S. and 813,257 world-wide.

The seven-day average of new U.S. cases through Sunday was 42,638, lower than the two-week average of more than 46,915, suggesting a downward trend. The seven-day average has been less than the two-week average for almost a month—though that has corresponded with a decline in testing. The seven-day average of tests in the U.S. fell to 674,235 on Aug. 23 from 785,019 a month earlier.

Louisiana’s health department said it would pause testing on Monday and Tuesday as a pair of tropical storms approached the Gulf Coast. It advised people to pack masks and hand sanitizer if evacuating, and to try to maintain social distance. Mississippi Emergency Management Agency Director Col. Gregory Michel said the state will have shelters open if needed, but cautioned that people are more likely to contract the virus in those settings.

Tropical Storm Marco made landfall at 6 p.m. CDT Monday, according to the National Hurricane Center, and has since been downgraded to a tropical depression. Tropical Storm Laura, heading toward the Gulf Coast, is forecast to be reclassified as a hurricane on Tuesday.

Researchers in Hong Kong said Monday that they had documented a case of Covid-19 reinfection, in a 33-year-old man who had an asymptomatic episode 4½ months after a symptomatic infection. The findings, based on a single patient, would if replicated bolster the theory that immunity to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, could last only a few months, much like immunity to coronaviruses that cause the common cold.

Doctors are also trying to understand the longer-term effects of Covid-19 in children.

Children now represent about 9% of all Covid-19 cases in the U.S., up from 2% in March, according to the most recent weekly report from the Children’s Hospital Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics. From July 9 to Aug. 13, cases in children doubled to 406,109, according to reports from 49 states.

Most children experience mild or no symptoms, doctors say. But some are reporting issues that persist for weeks, or the development of post-viral syndromes. Symptoms reported include fever, cough, headaches, shortness of breath and gastrointestinal problems.

Guam reported 87 new cases Monday, including 17 diagnosed at U.S. Department of Defense facilities. This brings total civilian cases to 764 and military cases to 143. The U.S. territory moved back into lockdown on Friday, and cases since Thursday now number 308. Authorities those testing positive included five staff members at four schools, which will now be deep-cleaned.

Schools were headed for closure in South Korea, which reported 280 new cases, bringing the total to 17,945. New infections over the past 12 days number 3,175, after months of just several dozen new cases a day. The jump has been linked with large churches. South Korea’s education ministry said students in the Seoul metropolitan area would shift to online learning from Wednesday until Sept. 11.

India on Tuesday reported 60,975 new cases, putting its total at 3,167,323, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It reported 848 new deaths, for a total of 58,390. The government cited aggressive testing and tracking and effective clinical management of patients in keeping the fatality rate relatively low.

Australia’s two most populous states, New South Wales and Victoria, said they would allow more residents in border communities to cross state lines for work or school by expanding the buffer zone to roughly 30 miles from a little more than a mile currently. Agricultural workers will be allowed to travel some 60 miles either side of the state line. Victoria reported 148 new infections and eight deaths. New South Wales had three new cases.

New Zealand reported seven new cases, all related to the community outbreak in Auckland, bringing total confirmed cases to 1,339. Health authorities said outbreak response was hurt by low levels of testing before the first new community case in months emerged on Aug. 11, as people grew confident the virus had been eliminated.

Japan on Tuesday reported 495 new cases, the smallest number July 20, when it was 418. Despite the downward trend, the government will continue limiting crowd sizes at sporting and other events to 5,000 people through the end of September, postponing the easing it had planned for the beginning of the month.
