Concerns about possible COVID-19 exposure have impacted the Last Dance World Series baseball tournament again.
Tournament organizers said Sunday morning Point Pleasant Boro and Middletown South -- a pair of teams undefeated in pool play -- were dropped from Tuesday’s South Round of 16 after the two revealed some players may have had contact with persons with confirmed cases of the coronavirus.
“This was an instance where we believed it was better to be safe than sorry,” said JT Kroeger, one of the tournament organizers. “According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control) even if every kid on the two teams received a rapid test and were negative, they would still be ineligible for participation because their exposure was within the five-day incubation period. As a result, the CDC does not value the rapid COVID test as valid.
“The coaches at Point Boro and Middletown South were informed of our decision and have no complaints. They understood the decision was made with the health and safety of all players and coaches on their teams and other teams.”
As a result of the decision to drop Point Pleasant Boro and Middletown South, the two play-in games scheduled for Monday at St. Joseph (Met.) have been canceled. The four teams scheduled to participate in the play-in games have been moved into the Round of 16 bracket in the South Region. Only the FirstEnergy Park site in Lakewood is impacted by the changes. All game times remain the same.
The complete, revamped schedule can be found below.
Here is the updated schedule at FirstEnegry Park, Lakewood:
- Middletown North vs. Gloucester Catholic/Brooklawn, 8:30 a.m.
- Sussex Red vs. Washington Township, 11:30 a.m.
- Kingsway vs. Howell, 3 p.m.
- St. Joseph (Met.) vs. Deptford, 6:30 p.m.
“Only High Point (Sussex Red) has to make a lengthy trip, however, we felt sending them to Lakewood made sense rather than make major changes in pairings and times that have undergone multiple changes already,” Kroeger said. “Brooklawn (Gloucester Catholic) has to make a trip early, but Brooklawn is a baseball factory and had no issue with it.”
Representatives of FirstEnergy Park, TD Bank Ballpark and Arm & Hammer Park urged fans to purchase tickets online in advance. There is a limit of 450 seats per game so fans can maintain social-distancing protocols.
