Kanye West is planning several events in the Charleston area today in a last-minute effort to get signatures for a declared run for president.
To qualify as an independent candidate for president in South Carolina, a candidate must turn in 10,000 signatures by noon Monday, according to current information on the South Carolina Election Commission website.
That cutoff date is normally July 15 but had been extended by 5 days due to the coronavirus state of emergency. West, a music and fashion mogul, would also have to file a statement of economic interest by the deadline.
The South Carolina Election Commission website does not list any filings by West, nor from the BDY political party that is linked to Kayne 2020 registration paperwork filed with the Federal Election Commission. West told a Forbes reporter in a July 8 interview that he was running under the Birthday Party political party.
Requests from The Greenville News for comment sent to an email and phone number linked to that FEC submission were not immediately returned Sunday.
In addition to several locations for in-person signatures in the Charleston area, West's signature effort includes ads directing people to an online signature form. However, it is unclear if the online signatures will count toward the 10,000 signature quota.
While digital signatures can be accepted, they must include a recreation of the voter's signature that can be compared to a version on file through driver's licenses. West's effort is using DocuSign software, an acceptable digital format by the state. The software can accept a touchscreen signature, which could match the voter's on-file signature, but on devices without a touchscreen, it uses an automatically-generated signature which will often not match the voter's signature and could be tossed out upon comparison.
If West gets 10,000 signatures that pass inspection, he would have to pay little to nothing more to be a registered candidate in South Carolina. There is no statewide cost for a petition candidate to register, although the Election Commission warns that some local jurisdictions could impose fees.
South Carolina does not allow write-in candidates for the presidential ballot.
West is one of more than 1,000 people nationwide who have declared intentions to run for president through various state mechanisms, most often a petition run.
He is not the only one to be focusing on a South Carolina bid. The Times and Democrat recently profiled a motivational speaker, Jade Simmons, in her effort to get 10,000 signatures, primarily in the Charleston area.
West has missed candidate deadlines in a number of critical states, including Michigan, Florida and Texas.
He paid $35,000 and filled out required paperwork to qualify last week for the Oklahoma ballot.
A group called Kanye 2020 filed the first federal paperwork for an election bid last week, a Statement of Organization. A required Statement of Candidacy has not yet been filed, it would trigger candidacy status under federal campaign finance law, a spokesman for the Federal Election Commission told USA Today last week.
