CLEVELAND, Ohio — In this week’s edition of our Browns mailbag, I answer questions about Myles Garrett, Jadeveon Clowney and more. Most of the questions are from our Football Insider Subscribers, who also participated in a roundtable with our Browns beat writers this week all about Baker Mayfield. If you’d like to try it free for two weeks, including Browns news sent right to your phone, text us at 216-208-3965.
Hey, Mary Kay: Do you think this will be the last contract Myles Garrett signs? He looks like he could walk away at 29 or so and pursue other interests. — Jordan in Raleigh
Hey, Jordan: It very well could be if it’s a long extension like the six-year deal that Chicago’s Khalil Mack signed in 2018. Garrett has always said he’d like to play about 10-12 years and then walk away from the game healthy and pursue things like paleontology and his humanitarian efforts. If Garrett wins a couple of Super Bowls in this next contract and achieves some of his personal goals such as NFL Defensive Player of the Year, I could see him walking away after this extension. He also stands to average about $25 million a year, so he’ll certainly be set for life financially.
Hey, Mary Kay: If the Browns sign Jadeveon Clowney, will it put the defense on the same plane as the offense? — Dave Fredecker, Rocky River, Ohio
Hey, Dave: Yes, I think the defense would have as much star power as the offense if they can land Clowney. I think the Browns are kind of in wait-and-see mode now like some other teams in regards to signing the three-time Pro Bowler. Other interested teams such as the Titans and Seahawks haven’t had much contact with Clowney lately, and he’s taking his time on a landing spot for next season. I don’t think the Browns are his first choice, but I also think he’ll sign here if the money is right.
Hey, Mary Kay: Have you heard when Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. are expected to be 100%? — 440
Hey, 440: Beckham should be mostly recovered from his core muscle surgery in January, and Landry is still a few months away from being fully recovered from his hip surgery in February. He hopes to be back on the field in August, but that could also stretch into September if that’s what’s best for him and the team. The key is that both players should be healthier than they were last season, and that will help the entire offense. I envision 1,000-yard seasons for both again, and more touchdown catches this year for Beckham, who had only four in 2019.
Hey, Mary Kay: Can one of you ask Kevin Stefanski what happened with Stefon Diggs last year, and how he would approach the Browns current No. 1 receiver [Odell Beckham Jr.] so that he doesn’t become disgruntled and leave like Diggs did? Or is the offensive system simply not going to work for the typical diva No. 1 WR? (And if that’s the case, why not trade him now?) — Kevin, St Louis
Hey, Kevin: Stefanski has already worked hard to win over Beckham and show him how he can excel in this system, and Beckham seems to be all in on the plan. I’m sure Stefanski learned from dealing with Diggs, and will do some things differently. Most importantly, he’ll need to keep the lines of communication open with Beckham and Jarvis Landry and make sure they’re not frustrated. The two have very high standards and expectations, and they’re both very influential in the locker room and on the field. If they’re not happy, it impacts the whole team. The hard part will be finding enough touches for all the weapons the Browns have on offense this season.
Hey, Mary Kay: I’m really worried about the defensive scheme which seems to devalue linebackers. I get that this wasn’t the year to acquire any, but to purposely scheme around them is a recipe for bad run defense - especially when you don’t have thumper safeties. — 410
Hey, 410: The linebacking corps is the biggest unknown heading into this season. The Browns will soon find out if they left themselves short at the position, or if younger guys such as Mack Wilson and Sione Takitaki are ready to step up and the take the reins. As you mentioned, the Browns won’t be in their base defense much, and will have two linebackers on the field much of the time. From the pool of B.J. Goodson, Wilson, Takitaki and third round pick Jacob Phillips, they should be able to find two good, consistent LBs. I was in favor of them signing Clay Matthews III, but they’ve shown no interest.
Hey, Mary Kay: Will the Browns defensive line really be improved this year in your opinion and if so, why? — Alan D. Crockett, Catonsville, MD
Hey, Alan: The defensive line will be better just by virtue of Myles Garrett and Olivier Vernon staying healthy and on the field this year, providing that’s the case. The defense went south last year when they missed all or most of the second half of the season. The Browns have also added defensive tackle Andrew Billings and edge rusher Adrian Clayborn. If they sign Clowney, Vernon would probably have to go, but that would push them over the top into a premier d-line.
