The NBA is planning to allow players to replace the last names on their jersey with statements about social justice, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. Players will be allowed to change their jerseys for the league’s Orlando restart, which begins July 30.

In a second tweet, Charania added that the National Basketball Players Association informed players of the decision Saturday night.

“NBPA sent players initial details on the plan tonight, stating it is working with the league and Nike,” Charania added in a second tweet. “NBA and the players union have been discussing various ways to allow players to express social justice issues in season restart.”

On a Friday conference call, league commissioner Adam Silver said the league was looking at ways to promote social justice during the 22-team restart in Orlando.

“We’ve been working with (NBPA Executive Director) Michele [Roberts], Chris [Paul] and Andre [Iguodala] and several other players on a shared goal that the season restart leads to collective action towards combating systematic racism and promoting social justice,” Silver said. “This includes strategies to increase Black representation in all positions across the NBA and its teams, ensure greater inclusion of Black-operated businesses across NBA business activities, and the formation of an NBA foundation to expand educational and economic development opportunities across the Black community.”

After the death of George Floyd last month, multiple NBA players took part in protests around the country and spoke out on issues related to systemic racism and social injustice. Multiple players, including Brooklyn’s Kyrie Irving and the Celtics’ Avery Bradley, began to question whether or not it was appropriate for the league to restart at Walt Disney World under the circumstances.

On Friday, Thunder guard and NBPA president Chris Paul said players were committed to using their platform to promote change this summer.

“There’s a lot of conversations that had to be had,” Paul said. “Us players had conversations with each other, and one of the biggest things to tell you the truth was teams wanted to know where their governors stood on the situation. There’s been a lot of hard conversations that have had to be had, and I think that was huge for players, right. For players, we want to know how someone feels, especially if you’re putting their jersey on.”
