Week 1 of the NFL season drew an average of 17.4 million viewers on television and digital platforms, a 7 percent increase over last season.

The viewership for the slate of 16 games was the second-highest Week 1 average over the last five seasons, according to the league. NFL games ranked as the top six telecasts for the Monday to Sunday broadcast week.

The first Monday Night Football broadcast of the season, a wild overtime affair between the Raiders and Ravens, averaged 15.3 million viewers across ESPN, ESPN2, ABC and ESPN Deportes — a total that included the Peyton and Eli Manning simulcast — up 59 percent over last season's Week 1 doubleheader.

Last Thursday night’s season opener with the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers edging the visiting Cowboys averaged 24.8 million TV and streaming viewers for NBC, the best opening-game numbers since 2015 when a Steelers-Patriots game averaged 27.4 million. Last season’s Thursday night season opener between the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans averaged 19.3 million.

Last season's ratings were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic as viewing habits changed and games were played with no fans in stadiums.
