JEFFERSON COUNTY, CO — If you have a clean driving record and you can pass background and drug tests, you could help kids get to school in Jefferson County, school district officials said.
In a letter to parents and community members sent Thursday, Jeffco Public Schools issued another plea for bus driver applicants.
"Since school started we have seen a significant drop in applications, and have been unable to recruit, hire, and retain enough drivers to maintain our current route schedule despite tremendous efforts taken to advertise, spread the word, and attract candidates," the letter read.
"Our drivers are treasured by our students and families! Consider this opportunity to join #TeamJeffco. Know somebody who might be interested? Let them know we are hiring."
As the weather grows colder, the risk of students left stranded at bus stops concerns many parents, and district officials warned that "temporary cancellations to bus routes may occur at any time and possibly, on very short notice," the letter read.
Some students were already impacted by the driver shortage after their parents didn't receive route cancellation notices this week.
"We ask our families to keep contact information in Jeffco Connect up to date to ensure they receive route cancellation messages," the district's letter read.
School bus driver shortages are impacting districts across the nation as the delta variant spreads. Many districts, including Jeffco, have been forced to recruit their mechanics, trainers and supervisors to drive routes.
