Vaccinations continue to cause Pennsylvania’s rate of new coronavirus cases to plummet despite loosening restrictions.

Over the last month, the seven-day average of daily new cases has fallen 80% to 439 new infections a day and 19 deaths a day over the last week, according to Pennsylvania Department of Health data. The case rate may soon fall below its lowest point since last June.

Since the virus was first detected in the state in March 2020, the coronavirus has infected 1,207,875 million people and claimed the lives of 27,457 people, the majority of them over 65, across Pennsylvania.

As of Friday, 72.8% of Pennsylvania adults have received at least one vaccine dose, while 56.6% are fully vaccinated. The state plans to lift its mask mandate when 70% of adults are totally vaccinated or on June 28, whichever comes first.

Fully vaccinated people already can ditch their masks indoors or outdoors, unless a business or organization requires it, under the state’s mask order.

In a role reversal, Philadelphia got a step ahead of the state on Friday when it lifted its requirements to wear masks indoors and outdoors after it hit several goals for new case counts, vaccination rates and hospitalization. Unvaccinated people are “strongly recommended” to keep wearing masks, but they no longer must use one. Philadelphia’s overall been slower than the state in lifting its mitigation measures throughout the pandemic.

Coming into the weekend, the daily number of new coronavirus cases is down 52% from two weeks ago and deaths are down 34%. There are 597 patients hospitalized statewide, a 46% decline from two weeks ago. Hospitalizations have not been this low since October.

Nationally, coronavirus cases are in a marked decline, averaging 13,409 cases a day over the last week with 387 deaths. That’s a 42% drop in new infections and 22% decline in deaths over the last 14 days. New cases have fallen to their lowest point since testing became widespread.

Largely, the per capita infection rate across Pennsylvania’s counties continues to fall. The small Sullivan, Potter and Bedford counties have the highest population-adjusted new case rates in the state. York is the largest county with an uptick in cases over the last week.

The Lehigh Valley reported 150 new cases over the last seven days and four deaths, bringing Lehigh and Northampton counties’ cumulative total to 75,546 infections and 1,575 lives lost.

The statewide test positivity rate for the week of May 28-June 3 stood at 2.9%, below the World Health Organization 5% threshold for recommended mitigation measures. The rate’s fallen in recent days, according to Johns Hopkins University tracking.

Pennsylvania’s vaccination campaign has found its footing. The state has administered first doses to 60.1% of the entire population, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

It now ranks fifth among all 50 states for total doses administered and ninth for first doses administered by percentage of population.

Nearly 57% of Pennsylvania adults are now fully vaccinated, while 72.8% have at least one dose. There are 1.67 million people awaiting their second dose.

The state has given first doses of vaccine to 57.3% of its population as of Thursday, according to the CDC. A total of 52.7% of Pennsylvania adults are fully vaccinated and 70% have their first shot, per the CDC.

At least 61.9% of Northampton County residents have at least one shot and 44.9% are fully vaccinated. In Lehigh County, at least 61.4% of residents have at least one shot and 48.4% are fully vaccinated.

There are 315,750 Lehigh Valley residents who are fully vaccinated and 100,139 who are awaiting their second shot.

The pace of vaccination is down from the mid-April average of 114,519 shots, but the seven-day average of shots ticked up slightly to 37,429 as of June 7. (These figures only include state data, excluding Philadelphia vaccinations.)

All Pennsylvanians age 12 and older are eligible to schedule a COVID-19 vaccine. Use Vaccine Finder to find a COVID-19 vaccine provider near you.
