On Monday morning, ESPN+ posted an exclusive article in which staff writer Bill Connelly counted down college football’s 50 greatest wide receivers of the last 50 years, and with little surprise, Pitt legend Larry Fitzgerald was almost good enough to top the list.

Fitzgerald, who played two seasons at Pitt from 2002-03, took the number two spot behind Marshall’s Randy Moss.

At Pitt, Fitzgerald hauled in 161 receptions for 2,677 yards and 34 touchdowns in 26 career games. In 2003, he led the nation in receiving yards (1,672) and receiving touchdowns (22). Fitzgerald finished second in Heisman voting in 2003 behind Oklahoma quarterback Jason White and took home the Biletnikoff Award and the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award along with being a consensus All-American.

Fitzgerald’s number 1 was officially retired by Pitt on Sept. 3, 2013.

He was drafted third overall to the Arizona Cardinals in the 2004 NFL Draft, and has spent 17 seasons with the team, putting together one of the most illustrious careers in the history of the NFL. Fitzgerald ranks second all-time in receptions (1,432) and receiving yards (17,492) and is sixth all-time in touchdown receptions (121). With 11 Pro-Bowl selections and an All-Pro nod to go along, Fitzgerald is a guaranteed first-ballot Hall-of-Famer.
