East Jefferson athletes were outstanding on the track — and field — as EJ competed against Klahowya, Olympic and Port Angeles in girls and boys track and field Saturday.

Highlights for the EJ girls at the meet at Klahowya included a first-place finish in the high jump by Aurin Asbell, with a laudable leap to clear 4-8.

Asbell also won the triple jump for EJ, with a top mark of 28-7/24.

Junior Lia Poore placed third for East Jefferson in the long jump (12-1).

On the boys side, EJ senior Tanner Carstensen took first in the triple jump with a season opening mark of 36-10/75. He also earned fifth place in the long jump.

Fellow senior Devin Harris took second in the high jump with a 5-0 leap.

In the javelin, Ellise Gardner was the top placer for EJ. The freshman finished in seventh place with a throw of 52-06.

In the discus, junior Ava Vaughan-Misfud placed third with a PR throw of 80-03.

East Jefferson’s Gina Brown, a senior, was right behind in fourth place with a PR of 77-0.

In the shot put, Brown nabbed third place with a 29-02 and Vaughan-Misfud was fourth with 25-02. Freshman Addy Asbell was sixth with a throw of 23-06/5.

Field conditions were favorable but not particularly spectacular. The meet opened with field events at 10 a.m. under cloudy skies with cool temperatures, according to the EJ coaching staff.

The running portion of the meet started at 11 a.m. March 27 with a combined boys and girls 3200-meter race.

Sophomore Sebastain Manza placed fifth in the boys event with a PR of 11:04 and freshman Fiona Fraser took second place in the girls race with a time of 13:03.

In the 100-meter dash, Aurin Asbell and sophomore Trevor Wilson were the top placers from EJ, with Asbell finishing fifth in 14.30 and Wilson running to fourth in 12.63.

Sophomore Camryn Hines and freshman Aliyah Yearian both competed in the 800-meter and 1600-meter races. In the 800 they placed second and fourth, respectively, with times of 2:44 and 2:50.

In the 1600, the pair crossed the line in second and third, with Hines clocking a PR of 5:57 and Yearian a PR of 5:58.

Freshman Tadu Dollarhide also ran in the 1600, placing seventh with a PR of 6:41.

In the 1600 boys race, junior Max Allworth-Miles ran to third in a time of 4:49 and freshman Denver Milne was the 10th finisher in a time of 5:43.

Freshman Grady McCary was the only EJ hurdler at the meet and he came in third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 55.31.

The relay handoffs proved challenging for EJ having had very little practice time, but the girls 4x100 took third place in 1:05.7 while the boys 4x400 claimed second in 3:58.

EJ will next compete at home on the Blue Heron Middle School track on Saturday, April 3. Field events start at 10 a.m. and track events follow at 11 a.m.
