WASHINGTON, D.C. - More than 200 years after the U.S. Capitol was breached and burned down by an invading army, U.S. citizens occupied the building on Wednesday, Jan. 6.
In 1814, the Capitol was burned down in an attack by the British during the War of 1812 – until today, that was the last time the Capitol was breached.
The violent protesters, supporters of President Donald Trump, descended on the grounds in the early afternoon in an attempt to thwart the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election.
Trump’s supporters stormed the steps and gained access to the building. Some protesters climbed scaffolding while others broke windows to get inside; photos and videos show damage inside the building. The occupation began around 2 p.m., which is when U.S. Capitol Police began evacuating some Congressional buildings, The Associated Press reports.
Trump lost the November election to Democrat Joe Biden. He has refused to concede and has worked over the past two months to convince his supporters that widespread voter fraud prevented his own victory, including during a rally on Wednesday morning when he urged a march on the Capitol.
More than two hours after lawmakers were evacuated, Trump issued a statement asking the “very special” protesters to “go home in peace” while also sympathizing with their plight to stop the peaceful transfer of power.
Violence has included the shooting of at least one woman, police officers have been injured, protesters used chemical irritants on police and explosive devices have been found.
