The Mega Millions jackpot worth $1 billion for Friday’s lottery drawing was won by a single ticket sold in Michigan, making it the third largest prize in U.S. lottery history.
The cash option for the lucky Mega Millions ticket is worth $739.6 million.
The winning numbers were: 4, 26, 42, 50 and 60. The Mega Ball drawn was 24 with a Megaplier of 2X.
There were 10 second-prize winning tickets sold for the drawing. Two tickets, sold in North Carolina and Virginia, are worth $2 million each because the purchaser paid for the Megaplier. The eight others sold in Florida (2), Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York (2) and Pennsylvania are worth $1 million each.
Only one Mega Millions drawing has produced a bigger jackpot winner — a South Carolina ticket hit the $1.537 billion Mega Millions jackpot in October 2018. It’s the largest jackpot won by a single ticket.
The largest U.S. lottery jackpot — a $1.586 billion Powerball prize in January 2016 was split among three ticket holders. The lucky tickets were sold in California, Florida and Tennessee.
Thirty-six Mega Millions drawings had been held since Adrian Tongson of Racine, Wisconsin hit the $120 million jackpot on Sept. 15. He chose the cash option and won $95.4 million before taxes.
Both Mega Millions and Powerball had been on a run without a winner for months until a Powerball ticket sold in Maryland hit Wednesday’s $731.1 million Powerball jackpot. The Mega Millions jackpot resets to $20 million for Tuesday’s drawing.
Two Mega Millions jackpots were hit in New Jersey in 2020. An anonymous winner claimed the $202 million prize won on Feb. 11 with a ticket sold in Edison and a $124 million ticket was bought in Bayonne for the July 24 drawing.
Mega Millions tickets cost $2 each and in New Jersey must be bought by 10:45 p.m. on the evening of the drawing. The odds of a ticket hitting the jackpot by matching five numbers and the Mega Ball are 302,575,350 to 1. Players have a 1 in 12,607,306 shot to win the second prize of at least $1 million by matching five numbers.
Saturday’s Powerball drawing is worth $20 million with a cash option of $15 million.
