It's been exactly one month since the Winter Solstice when we had the least amount of daylight of the year, and daylight is starting to increase at a faster rate.
In fact, tonight's sunset was the last one before 5pm until Daylight Saving Time ends on November 7th, and Daylight Saving Time hasn't even begun yet. That means we will have 289 days with sunsets at or later than 5pm, which is 79% of the year. The darkest one-fifth of the year is behind us!
It was another windy day today, but when combined with sunshine high temperatures soared into the mid to upper 30s! However, the wind has since shifted to the northwest and is now blowing in much colder air.
A cold front is moving through, and the slight chance for snow we were forecasting yesterday looks to have missed us to the south and east. Temps to the northwest of Eau Claire dropped into the teens around 4pm and we're all headed towards zero, possible colder, tonight.
Wind chills will make it feel 5 to 10 degrees colder than the air temperature even at the coldest point early tomorrow morning as the sky remains mostly clear.
We have not had many of the traditional frigid but sunny days this January, but that's exactly what's being forecast for Friday. Highs will only make it to the low to mid teens, but there will be plenty of sun. It looks to be a couple degrees colder Friday night into Saturday morning with less wind and a clear sky, but clouds return Saturday.
Snow arrives during the afternoon and we can expect several inches of light and fluffy snow by Sunday morning. The snow will be over early Sunday with just flurries lingering.
Expect more details including our first snow total forecast Friday morning on Daybreak with Meteorologist Justin Esterly. After the weekend, some flurries are possible early in the week as a snow storm misses us to the south (closer to the WI-IL border).
The next snow chance for Western Wisconsin is centered on Wednesday.
