Armed robberies reported

in Diagonal Road vicinity

Officers responded to an armed robbery call Thursday night to find out it was the second one in a matter of hours in the Sherbondy Hill neighborhood.

According to Akron police, a man told officers he was sitting in his vehicle in the 1200 block of Diagonal Road just before midnight. An unknown man wearing a black hoodie and face mask approached the man and asked for a few dollars, police said.

Police said when the man reached in his pocket to retrieve money, the robber brandished a handgun and took the man’s money, then fled in an unknown direction.

While police were at the scene, a woman told officers her father was robbed in the same area a few hours ago at about 9 p.m.

Police said her father had a hard time remembering the incident, other than being struck in the face multiple times. He reported to police that he lost consciousness and at some point was helped home by good Samaritans, police said. An unknown amount of cash was taken.

SUMMIT COUNTY

ReWorks starts program

to urge creative recycling

ReWorks, the solid waste management authority for Summit County, has established an art and education program called cReate Works to encourage new and innovative perspectives toward "reduce, reuse, recycle."

Each project challenges a group of artists to address a theme around the practices of reducing, reusing and recycling and to create works in a variety of mediums.

This year’s project is "Reframing Recycling," with photography as its medium.

Selected artists will be asked to provide photographic images to represent their interpretation of the transformation of five categories of common recyclable materials during the recycling process that are accepted materials that residents can place in home curbside recycling carts or at community recycling drop-off centers: plastic bottles and jugs, cartons, metal beverage and food cans, flattened cardboard and paper (no shredded paper).

The application is free and open to all. The deadline to submit the application is Aug. 25. Selected artists will receive a stipend of $250 each. Images that are submitted with applications should be of existing work. Selected artists will be asked to photograph recycling materials.
