After three days of honoring Class of 2020 seniors, who lost their season as the result of the COVID-19 pandemic during the spring, the Last Dance World Series Baseball Tournament will take a serious turn.
The LDWS crowned 31 of 32 regional champions Thursday -- 15 in the North and 16 in South. One remaining champion will be crowned Saturday night when Jefferson plays Sussex Red/High Point/Wallkill at 6 p.m. at Skylands Stadium in Augusta.
All regional champions advanced to the Round of 16 in both North and South sections next Tuesday, July 21. North games will be played at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, Skylands Stadium in Augusta and Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls. South games will be held at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood and a site to be determined.
The Jefferson-Sussex Red game was postponed Thursday while a Sussex player sought out a rapid coronavirus test. The results of that test were negative, according to tournament director Mike Murray. A travel ball coach tested positive for the virus earlier this week and the player had contact with the coach.
Jefferson and Sussex Red are both undefeated in pool play. The winner advances in the North bracket.
Another game in the Sussex regional, between Roxbury and Sussex White (Newton/Hopatcong/North Warren), was also postponed until Saturday.
Below is a list of regional champions, followed by a tentative pairings for the regional Rounds of 16. Those pairings are subject to change and will not be official until Saturday, Murray said.
Teams with the best records in the regionals or teams that won the run differential tie-breakers advanced.
The pairings are based on seeds that are the same as region numbers: 1/16, 8/9, 5/12, 4/13, 3/13, 6/11, 7/10 and 2/15.
