The lumpy, bumpy, potholed, and, at times, dangerous stretch of Telegraph Avenue is, at long last, being repaved.
For a decade, locals and business owners have implored Oakland to repave Telegraph between 37th and 52nd streets, and anyone who's ever driven or biked the route knows exactly why. Huge dents pockmark the street and tight streets make conditions unsafe for the usual bustle of pedestrians, vehicles and bikes. In 2017, the city assessed Telegraph between 46th and 51st to be an 18 out of 100 in its road ratings. One hundred represents a freshly paved street while a zero is a road that's entirely unpaved.
Paving is scheduled to last for the next two to three weeks, and rolling partial closures will be effect for the duration. Per the city:
"Construction is anticipated to occur in the following order: grinding and paving will begin with the travel lane closest to the curb & parking lanes first, beginning at 37th St and working northbound to 52nd St. During this time, northbound travel on Telegraph will be reduced to one lane and east-side side streets will not have access to Telegraph.
"Then, grinding and paving will begin on the outside travel lanes & parking lanes at 52nd St and proceed southbound to 37th St. During this time, southbound travel will be reduced to one lane and west-side side streets will not have access to Telegraph.
"Finally, grinding and paving will be performed on the inside travel lanes and center turn lane. During this time, Telegraph will be reduced to one lane in each direction with no side street access closures."
Along with the safety issues presented by shoddy streets, the city also labeled it a "high injury corridor," designating as it one of the city's most common places for severe or fatal crashes. Among the changes planned as part of the project are bus-boarding islands, better marked crosswalks, ADA-compliant curb ramps and more. You can see more details on those changes here.
